What timber oil-ready means on the floor

Timber oil-ready from our Germiston floor means each edge is dressed with a fine sanding pass, prepared for direct application of oil-based finishes. You get timbers free from router burn or coarse spiral marks, often ready for the first coat with just a quick de-dust. We aim for a grade that fits workshop expectations for internal joinery, furniture panels, display work, and fit-out jobs, especially where the timber’s natural grain will show through. This is not the same as a final furniture polish, but it bridges most of the prep work.

If you usually find yourself reaching for abrasive blocks to clean up CNC or panel saw cuts, this option reduces that step. We handle the bulk removal and refinement so you can focus on applying finishing oils or stains. Job sites in coastal regions like Durban or Gqeberha appreciate this, with humidity often making hand-sanding a sticky business. Gauteng workshops, where dust build-up can be a daily battle, also benefit from receiving parts that only need a light touch-up.

Who benefits, and who should skip it

Our oil-ready finish is a fit for cabinetmakers, shopfitters, furniture producers, and interior teams who want to show off solid timber or veneer. If your next step is a penetrating oil, hardwax, or blend, we save you significant time. It is also helpful for contractors fitting timber details on site, where time on the ground is tight. However, it does not suit anyone requiring high-gloss or thick varnish as the next step, those need a higher-dress and possibly sealer-ready or lacquer-ready surface.

If you plan to paint, our paint-ready MDF or other appropriate finishes are better suited. Some edge treatments like rounded radii, deep chamfers, or routed grooves might still need light hand finishing after delivery, depending on your spec. You can see more finishing options on our finishes page if you are unsure what best matches your process.

How we prepare oil-ready timber orders

Each cut part passes through a dedicated sanding stage after profiling. Operators select sanding grades matched to the timber species and intended oil finish, typically ranging from P150 to P220 for most hardwoods and panel products. The aim is a consistent, fine surface along every machine-cut edge, whether it was run on a CNC, panel saw, or router. Corners are kept crisp unless specified otherwise.

Orders are nested for material efficiency before machining, so your yield is maximised. If your drawing calls for both curved and straight runs, we match the finish across both. Most weeks, batches leave our floor for fitters in Bloemfontein, industrial teams around Midrand, and shopfitters in Cape Town, so we’re familiar with local needs and courier realities. The label shows the job and spec, so your bench team can see what arrives and what it’s ready for.

Example: Quick turnaround for a restaurant fit-out

A Joburg shopfitter sends a nest of 18 mm oak table edges and wall cappings, specifying oil-ready on all visible lengths. We machine and sand to spec, mark every stack by zone, and pack them for rapid handover. The parts arrive at the job site, where the team wipes down the boards, applies a natural oil, and installs without the half-day of sanding that normally follows raw cutting.

This approach meant the restaurant could open sooner, with a clean, matte finish showing the oak’s real texture. Workshop hours were saved, and there was less dust to manage onsite. Our oil-ready process is just one way we help production stay on track across Gauteng and the regions.

What to prepare before you email us

Clear communication up front saves time and gets your parts correct the first time. Before you write through our contact form, grab your technical drawings and job notes. Tell us the main species, sheet thickness, edge type, and if there are any radiused or profiled edges that need extra attention. Screenshots or marked-up PDFs help us match your vision.

If you need a different finish on another part of the order, mention it, mixing matte clear, powder-coat prep, or edge banding is normal. You can also browse our resources or machines pages for more info about capabilities before you finalise your request.

Watchpoints and common mistakes

Make sure your timber is right for your intended finish. Oil-ready is not suitable if you want a high-gloss result, lacquer or thick varnish. If your site is prone to power cuts or damp conditions, let us know when ordering, as this may affect how soon you should oil or seal your timber after delivery. Mixed species in one order may need slightly different sanding passes.

Keep in mind that certain profiles or deep cuts may leave minor end-grain roughness, particularly on softwoods. Tell us which faces must be presentation quality to avoid surprises. If unsure, ask our team about combining oil-ready with other specialist finishes on the same order.
